This guide will show you how to prepare your own account if something were to happen to you, as well as how to memorialize a loved ones account.
How to prepare your own account
Click the arrow on the right side of the blue nav bar.
Go to Settings
Click Security on the left
Click the Edit button beside Legacy Contact
Add a friend or family member here that is your most trusted contact. I would recommend putting one of your parents, a very close friend, or a boyfriend/girlfriend that you’ve been with for more than a year.
“A legacy contact is someone who you choose to manage your account after you pass away. They’ll be able to do things like pin a post on your Timeline, respond to new friend requests and update your profile picture. They won’t post as you or see your messages.”
That’s the guide for setting up your own account with a Legacy Contact. This is a great backup solution, and I have added my mom as my Legacy Contact on my personal Facebook account.
Memorializing a loved ones account
If a loved one passes away, it’s actually quite easy to memorialize their account. All you have to do is go to this URL, and fill in the following information:
- Your email address
- Link to the profile of the person who passed away (or if you can’t get this, their full name, birthday, and the date they passed away)
- Proof of death (Obituary or other proof of their death)
